Angels GM Search Pauses as Owners Delay Sale Vote
Interim GM John Mozeliak says the team will wait for MLB to approve the Kroenke acquisition before aggressively pursuing new leadership.

The search for a new general manager for the Los Angeles Angels remains frozen. Interim GM John Mozeliak confirmed on Wednesday that the club has not yet interviewed any external candidates. He stated the process is on hold until Major League Baseball votes to approve the sale of the franchise to Stan Kroenke’s group.
The timeline for that vote has shifted. Mozeliak believed on Wednesday morning that the approval could happen during the owners meetings scheduled for November 17 through 19 in New York. However, a major league source indicated the sale is not currently on the docket for that session. Other front office members shared that expectation until they were informed otherwise on Wednesday. The source noted that while the vote could be added to the agenda or held remotely later, neither scenario is expected at this time.
The financial agreement between Kroenke Sports & Entertainment and owner Arte Moreno was announced on September 1. The deal was originally projected to close in the first quarter of 2027. Mozeliak identified the MLB approval as the primary barrier. He expects KSE to take over the majority of decision-making authority once that hurdle is cleared.
Mozeliak described the current state of the search as limited to an internal list of candidates. He said the team will wait for the vote before launching an aggressive pursuit of external talent. He noted that he is under contract through December and will assist in any capacity, but KSE will lead the effort.
There is no rule preventing the Angels from hiring a GM before the sale is finalized, according to an MLB spokesman. Mozeliak acknowledged he is already collaborating with KSE on specific decisions, such as the choice to not retain Manager Kurt Suzuki. The new GM will subsequently select the next manager.
The position is viewed as highly desirable due to Kroenke’s financial resources and his reputation for granting autonomy. This has fueled speculation that the Angels might target a current leader from another organization. Mozeliak said the Angels have not yet asked permission to interview anyone currently heading another team’s baseball operations.
Time is becoming a factor for roster moves. Less than one month remains before the expected lockout on December 1 freezes most player movement. Mozeliak is attending the GM Meetings in Las Vegas next week. He plans to use the time to assess the six-year free agent market and understand trade options. He said he expects to gather information rather than execute major moves before KSE takes control.
Mozeliak expressed doubt that the team will make large signings before the transition, though he admitted unexpected changes can occur. The team is actively engaged in the market while it waits for the owners to act.
