Michelle Cooper converted a penalty kick five minutes into extra time to give the Kansas City Current a 1-0 victory over Angel City. The result ended Angel City's 10-game unbeaten streak and sent the Current to the NWSL semifinals. The match was played to a narrow scoreline over 120 minutes at CPKC Stadium on Saturday.
Both teams scored 54 goals during the 2026 regular season, tying for the most in the league. Despite those regular-season numbers, the quarterfinal evolved into a defensive contest. Neither side could find the back of the net during the initial 90 minutes, forcing the game into additional periods.
Angel City had entered the playoffs after a midseason coaching change. The club hired Leif Gunnar Smerud as interim head coach following the departure of Alexander Straus. They also acquired Ally Sentnor in a summer trade with Kansas City. Defender Savy King returned from injury to play at right back, while Sarah Gorden and Emily Sams anchored the defensive line.
The defensive shape of both teams limited scoring chances in the first half. Kansas City created a few opportunities, including a header from a combination of Haley Hopkins, Temwa Chawinga, and Cooper that was caught by Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson. Current goalkeeper Lorena also made a key save shortly after Chawinga's attempt. Gabrielle Robinson, a center back for the Current, credited the team's success in winning second balls against Angel City's long passes.
Angel City kept the score level through regulation. Anderson made a crucial save in stoppage time to prevent a late equalizer. The match proceeded to extra time after eight corners were awarded to Kansas City and 11 to Angel City. The teams traded set pieces throughout the additional time.
The deciding moment came on a set piece delivery from Izzy Rodriguez. The referee called a penalty for a pushing foul by Anderson. Cooper, who typically serves as the backup penalty taker behind captain Lo'u LaBonta, stepped up to take the kick. Current manager Chris Armas confirmed that the plan was for Cooper to take the penalty in the event of a spot kick in extra time.
Cooper buried the shot to give Kansas City the lead. Armas noted that LaBonta often protects Cooper in high-pressure moments, handing her the ball. Cooper acknowledged the significance of scoring after missing last year's quarterfinal exit due to a foot injury. She stated that the team has taken things personally this season and maintains a never-say-die mentality.
The victory extends the Current's unbeaten run at CPKC Stadium to 16 matches. They are now positioned to face the winner of the Gotham FC and Seattle Reign quarterfinal, which is scheduled for Sunday. The NWSL semifinals will be played on November 14 and 15.
