Residents of the Karak governorate learned Monday that the three men responsible for Friday's deadly church attack are in custody. All three suspects were wounded during a pre-dawn police operation, and no members of the security forces sustained injuries.
The shooting occurred Friday during a funeral service at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hammoud. Security officials identified the three men as the perpetrators of the attack. Karak, located south of the capital Amman, is home to a small Christian community.
Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya confirmed the arrests during a phone interview with state television. He stated that the security services captured the individuals after they put up fierce resistance. Al-Faraya described the men as sustaining severe injuries before being taken into custody.
The Public Security Directorate released a statement noting that the three had met their just fate. The directorate emphasized that the suspects were identified early in the investigation. The agency did not name the individuals or link them to any specific Islamist militant groups.
King Abdullah II directed authorities to respond with an iron fist against the outlaws of Islam. He warned against anyone attempting to undermine the unity of the Jordanian people. No armed group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of Monday.
The security forces completed the apprehension of the suspects without further incidents in the area. The directorate affirmed that terrorism has no place in Jordanian society. The three men remain in custody pending further review.
