The University of Texas at San Antonio has suspended its men’s basketball head coach following an arrest. Austin Claunch was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The suspension took effect on Wednesday.
Lisa Camos, the vice president for intercollegiate athletics at UTSA, announced the move in a school statement. She identified Nick Bowman as the new acting head coach. Bowman currently serves as an assistant coach on the team.
Claunch issued a public statement expressing regret for his actions. He described the incident as a grave error in judgment. He apologized to the players, staff, and the broader university community.
In his remarks, Claunch acknowledged the leadership role expected of him. “I recognize the responsibility that comes with being a head coach and the example I am expected to set, both on and off the court,” he said. “I fell short of those expectations, and for that, I am truly sorry.”
The school said it is currently reviewing the circumstances of the arrest. Officials have not yet determined the length or specific conditions of the suspension. UTSA will decide on next steps after this internal review is complete.
