The Red River Cultural District announced that Free Week will expand to a three-day event in 2027. The festival is scheduled for January 7 through 9. This marks the first time the annual program will run longer than two days.

The 2026 edition of the event featured more than 80 musical acts. These performances took place across 14 venues in the Red River Cultural District. The district is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and developing the neighborhood.

Free Week operates on a donation model. Attendees pay no admission fee but are encouraged to tip staff and purchase food and beverages. This structure provides paid gigs for local musicians while keeping financial risk low for attendees.

A sister event, Hot Summer Nights, follows the same donation-based format. Both festivals aim to drive local musical discovery. They also raise funds for projects managed by the Red River Cultural District.

Artists may still apply to perform online at no cost. Accepted performers will receive notification at least 30 days before the event. The organization encourages bands, solo artists, and DJs to apply. It specifically invites performers who have not played at a district event in the past two years.

Nicole Klepadlo, executive director of the Red River Cultural District, said the event prioritizes Austin's music community. She noted that the expansion brings the festival experience back for three days in 2027. The group aims to create opportunities for artists and venues while allowing residents to experience local talent.
