The University of Cambridge has appointed Jason Beer KC to lead an independent review into the handling of academic misconduct allegations against Jason Arday. Beer, who served as lead counsel for the Post Office Horizon IT statutory inquiry, will examine the institutional decisions made surrounding Arday’s resignation and death.

The review will assess three specific areas of university action. First, it will evaluate how the university processed allegations of research and other misconduct. Second, it will examine the procedures used to recruit Arday, who became the institution’s youngest Black professor at age 37. Third, it will review the support systems provided to Arday after his appointment. Beer stated that the university requested an independent, thorough, and searching examination of its arrangements and the decisions it took concerning the professor.

Arday, a professor of the sociology of education, died at his home in south London in August 2026. He was facing public accusations of plagiarism and inconsistencies in his career statements. Arday denied the plagiarism charges. On 5 August, Cambridge announced it would investigate his academic qualifications. He resigned within hours of that announcement and was found dead nine days later.

Beer outlined his methodology, stating he will look not only at what university policies required but also at whether those policies were reasonable. He will assess how they operated in practice, who made decisions, what information was available to decision-makers, and whether relevant concerns were addressed. He also pledged to treat participants with sensitivity, respect confidentiality, and ensure fairness to those whose actions are examined.

This appointment is part of a two-part independent examination of Cambridge’s involvement with Arday. The first review, announced in September, is led by Nazir Afzal, a former chief crown prosecutor for north-west England. Afzal’s scope focuses on the support given to Arday in the immediate period before his death. Beer’s review covers the broader institutional context and the pre-resignation handling of allegations.

Beer brings experience from several public inquiries, including work for NHS England on the Covid-19 inquiry. His role in the Post Office inquiry involved investigating the wrongful criminal prosecution of nearly 1,000 post office operators. He has convened a panel of independent experts to assist in this task.

Deborah Prentice, the university’s vice-chancellor, confirmed the appointment. She described Beer as an eminent legal expert with vast experience leading complex reviews. She said the university looks forward to receiving findings and recommendations from his team in due course.
