Denise Powell took control of Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District from the Republican Party on Tuesday night, marking a shift in legislative leadership for the state’s central region. The former state legislator now holds the seat previously occupied by Donald Bacon, bringing a new set of economic and regulatory goals to the House.

Powell identified cost reduction for residents as the primary driver of her electoral success. She stated that voters across the district expressed concern about financial strain, a sentiment she observed among both Democratic and Republican constituents. Powell attributed the margin of victory to this shared economic pressure, noting that many neighbors are currently struggling.

Her legislative agenda centers on reversing recent federal cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. Powell described the current healthcare framework as weakened and unstable. She plans to prioritize the restoration of these programs to stabilize coverage for Nebraskans.

Trade policy also features prominently in her platform. Powell intends to work toward reversing tariffs implemented by President Donald Trump. She cited these levies as a key factor in rising consumer prices. Additionally, she called for an expansion of clean energy investment, criticizing recent reductions in that sector included in the legislation she referred to as the "big beautiful bill."

Powell said she will pursue a 360-degree approach to energy production. She expressed interest in joining the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Agriculture Committee. She believes Nebraska requires a dedicated voice in those specific policy discussions.

The incoming representative is coordinating with the office of outgoing Rep. Don Bacon to manage the transition. Powell said she has already spoken with Bacon regarding the Offut Air Force Base. She confirmed that maintaining the base as a priority in Washington remains a key objective for her tenure.

She also listed ending the war in Iran as a top priority. Powell said she hopes to collaborate with Republican colleagues in the chamber, citing the common concerns she heard from voters during the campaign as a basis for bipartisan work.
