The New Jersey Devils defeated the Dallas Stars 5-1 on Tuesday night.
The victory snapped a five-game winning streak for the Stars and extended the Devils' own winning run to four consecutive games. This game marked the season high for goals scored against Dallas, which entered the contest with the league's best goals-against average of 1.68.
Connor Hellebuyck stopped 16 of 17 shots faced in his debut for New Jersey. The three-time Vezina Trophy winner started just four days after being traded by the Winnipeg Jets following a suspension for missing training camp. This was his first win since a 3-2 result at St. Louis on April 9. Casey DeSmith made 22 saves for Dallas, his third start of the season, after allowing only two goals in each of his previous two appearances.
Nico Hischier scored two goals for the Devils. The team captain, in his 10th season with the club, put New Jersey ahead 2-0 with 2:41 remaining in the first period and again 38 seconds into the second. Dallas challenged for goaltender interference on Timo Meier during the first goal, but the call was denied. Hischier now leads the team with seven goals and has two two-goal games this season. Jesper Boqvist made it 3-0 midway through the second period.
Justin Hryckowian scored the only goal for the Stars. His deflection cut the deficit to two goals at 16:08 of the second period. Luke Hughes answered just 28 seconds later to restore the three-goal margin. Jack Hughes also scored for New Jersey. The Stars' penalty kill unit, ranked second in the league, was perfect, stopping all three penalties for 22 consecutive successful kills over six games.
Kyle Capobianco left the game five minutes into the third period with an apparent leg injury and did not return. This was Dallas' fourth game during a six-game homestand. The loss began a road back-to-back schedule for the Devils.
