Jeffries Claims Impeachment Not Priority After Democratic Sweep
The New York Democrat stated no caucus members requested an investigation into the president, sparking immediate demands for a different speaker.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated on Wednesday that not a single member of the House Democratic caucus has approached him regarding the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
Jeffries made the remarks at a press conference the day after Democrats secured major electoral victories. He described the caucus as relentlessly focused on affordability and accountability rather than removal proceedings.
The leader announced his intention to seek the speakership during the same event. He later appeared on MS NOW’s Morning Joe, where he argued that the American people want results on their behalf rather than retribution.
Online criticism intensified following his comments. Many users accused Jeffries of conceding ground to Republicans immediately after voters rejected the administration's agenda. One user on X wrote that having no speaker would be preferable to selecting Jeffries. Another commenter stated he is the wrong choice for the current political moment.
Political commentator Hasan Piker countered the narrative by asserting that the party is looking for justice. Several petitions circulated urging House Democrats to elect a different leader. One Change.org petition, initiated months before the elections, had collected over 300,000 signatures by Wednesday.
Jeffries faces the challenge of unifying his caucus while managing the immediate pressure to define the new majority's agenda.
