Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado arrived at a church in Lara State on Sunday. The Nobel Peace Prize winner made a public appearance after spending nearly 11 months in exile. Supportive citizens greeted her with applause and hugs. Machado confirmed the arrival on social media. She wrote, “I am here. With you.”

This marks her first public appearance on Venezuelan soil since December. Machado went into hiding after a brief detention during anti-government demonstrations. She spent the past year abroad seeking support for a democratic transition. Her earlier attempts to return home faced logistical hurdles. Neighboring Caribbean territories denied her landing permissions.

Fellow opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia confirmed the return. He described the moment as a pivotal step for the nation’s democratic future. González Urrutia indicated he intends to rejoin Machado in Venezuela in the near future.

The political situation in Caracas changed during Machado’s absence. U.S. military forces ousted former President Nicolás Maduro in January. Maduro was flown to New York to face federal drug charges. Longtime ruling party official Delcy Rodríguez assumed the role of interim president. Washington backed her appointment. Criticism has grown as the interim administration exceeded its original timeframe. The government has not established a concrete date for national presidential elections.

Machado and her coalition continue to pressure the current government. The opposition movement demands a swift return to the polls. They also seek safe passage for political exiles and the release of political prisoners. U.S. diplomats have prioritized economic stabilization measures prior to voting. U.S. President Donald Trump addressed reporters on Sunday. He noted that he was unfamiliar with the specifics of her return. He expressed warm sentiments toward Machado and voiced hope for her safety.

Machado’s presence is expected to revitalize the domestic opposition. Supporters hold rallies demanding a definitive end to interim rule. They call for a clear path toward free elections.
