OpenAI Targets Massive New Raise

The AI lab is pursuing a major private funding round that would set a record valuation for a non-public company.

OpenAI is reportedly assembling a massive round of private capital, a move that would value the artificial intelligence lab at a level unseen in corporate history for a company that has not gone public. The firm is working on raising up to $30 billion at a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion, with the funding led by Coatue and investors in the UAE, according to sources who spoke with CNBC. This effort to secure more private capital comes as the company proceeds with plans for an initial public offering.

The terms of the deal are still under negotiation and could shift before any agreement is finalized. Reports also indicate that the funding from the UAE might be coupled with an arrangement to secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI from that nation. OpenAI declined to comment on the matter.

A valuation of this magnitude would make OpenAI the most valuable private company ever, surpassing any previous record for a venture-backed firm. It would also set a very high starting point for its upcoming public market debut. The company filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, following a funding round in March that valued the ChatGPT creator at $852 billion.

The timeline for these events stretches back to early in the year. In March, a funding round placed OpenAI's value at $852 billion. By May, competitor Anthropic raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation in what was widely seen as its final major private round before a public offering. Both companies then filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, signaling their intent to go public.

This latest reported valuation figure of $1.25 trillion is a change from a report a month ago, which had indicated a $1.4 trillion valuation. The reported valuation for OpenAI's next funding round would exceed the $1 trillion mark. This level of valuation for a private company would be unprecedented.

The scale of the proposed funding for OpenAI could influence the path of its competitors. Anthropic is also preparing for an IPO, and some reports suggest its public S-1 filing could appear at any time. The company is reportedly seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its public debut.

What is next for OpenAI involves finalizing the terms of this private funding round. The company continues to move forward with its IPO process, for which it filed confidential paperwork in June. The outcome of these private funding negotiations will shape the financial landscape for the company as it prepares to enter the public markets, a step it has been preparing for since the first half of the year.
