Senator-elect James Talarico appeared on Good Morning America on Wednesday to detail his plan for working with Republican lawmakers in Washington. He positioned himself as a bridge between the parties, specifically regarding legislation on immigration. Talarico stated that he is a border security Democrat and that he needs to bring both parties together to pass comprehensive reform. This follows a Tuesday night victory speech in Houston where he told voters who did not choose him that he would fight for them just as hard as he would for those who did.

In that initial address, Talarico said that extending an open hand rather than a closed fist often surprises people. He used the interview to expand on that message of unity. The approach has drawn immediate praise from his base. Micael Cano, a Talarico supporter, said the senator-elect invited everyone to the table and did not create division among anyone.

Reaction from the opposition is more measured. Chris Daniel, a Harris County District Clerk candidate who lost the Republican primary to Ken Paxton, said supporters must give the new senator a chance. Daniel noted that he is receptive to the overture, but he is not sure Talarico is making inroads with other Paxton backers yet. He said it will come down to results and that if Talarico makes them, he will win over new supporters.

Daniel also pointed to the challenges facing a new member of Congress. He said Talarico is coming in as a freshman and will have to learn the ropes. Daniel noted that this is not something learned overnight, referencing the experience of Ted Cruz.
