Senator Ted Cruz stood on the podium at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin to present the first-place trophy to Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli. The crowd responded with loud, continuous booing for approximately 90 seconds. The noise began as Cruz stepped forward and did not stop until he placed the trophy in Antonelli's hands. At that moment, the booing shifted instantly to cheering. The change in sound made it clear that the disapproval was aimed at the senator, not the race winner.
David Croft, a Formula 1 commentator for Sky Sports, noted the reaction during the live broadcast. He stated that the midterms are approaching and that people are already voting with their voices. Cruz is not on the midterm ballot. He has not confirmed plans to run for president a second time. However, political observers say his actions suggest he is already campaigning for the highest office in the country.
The booing started before the podium ceremony. Eyewitnesses on social media reported jeers when Cruz was announced as a dignitary attending the event. This incident follows a similar event in September. Cruz was booed during an interview on ESPN's College Game Day. That appearance happened ahead of the Texas Longhorns football game against Ohio State on September 12. He appeared in person to promote the Protect College Sports Act.
The bill has passed the Senate and now awaits final approval in the House. Critics argue the legislation caps student athlete earnings. They also say it prevents athletes from unionizing or engaging in collective bargaining. Despite the noise at the race track, Cruz did not mention the booing in his social media post about the event.
On X, the Texas senator described the day as an outing with his daughter, Caroline. He wrote that it was a perfect dad-daughter afternoon. Cruz said the eyes of the racing world were on Texas. He congratulated Kimi Antonelli on a huge win. He called it an honor to present the championship trophy. The tweet focused entirely on the family trip and the race result, leaving out the public reaction to his presence.
