Julian Lewis was transported to the hospital following a medical emergency at the University of Colorado athletic facility on Wednesday. The move affects the Buffaloes' quarterback competition ahead of their Saturday game against Kansas State. Lewis, a sophomore, had not played in a game since losing his starting position during the team's Big 12 opener at Baylor.
T.C. Lewis, the player's father, announced the news on X on Thursday. He stated that his son is recovering and expressed gratitude to the medical team, teammates, and fans for their support. The family indicated they have no further comments at this time and did not provide specifics regarding the nature of the emergency.
Colorado Athletics confirmed the incident in a Thursday statement. The school said it extends full support to Lewis and his family. The university noted that the player's health is the top priority for all coaches and staff members.
Lewis was listed as doubtful on the initial Big 12 availability report Wednesday night. He enters this period as a 2-5 team, with a 0-5 record in conference play. Backup quarterback Isaac Wilson has started the last three games for the Buffaloes.
During his four starts earlier this season, Lewis threw for 733 yards on a 64% completion rate. He accounted for seven total touchdowns and three turnovers. Coach Deion Sanders addressed the quarterback competition during his Tuesday news conference.
Sanders said he did not want to give an answer that could be perceived as taking a shot at the player. He declined to go down that rabbit hole and told reporters to do their homework. Colorado hosts Kansas State on Saturday.
