Polish prosecutors have filed three charges against a 30-year-old man. Authorities arrested the suspect last weekend in the Bielany district of Warsaw.
The man was hiding in a wooded area for several weeks. Police located him after tracing his movements following the attack. He is now held in pre-trial detention for three months.
The incident occurred in mid-October on a city bus in the Żoliborz district. The suspect stabbed two Ukrainian passengers with a knife. Both victims suffered multiple stab and slash wounds and were taken to the hospital.
Investigators determined that the attacker targeted the men because of their ethnicity. Police identified the suspect shortly after the event. He fled the scene before officers arrived.
The suspect is a repeat offender. He served an intermittent sentence between April 2021 and February 2023 for a similar intentional crime. The Warsaw-Żoliborz District Court imposed that sentence of at least six months.
The current charges carry prison sentences ranging from three to 20 years. Two of the three charges specifically address the ethnic motivation of the crime. The case adds to a series of recent attacks on Ukrainians in Poland.
Other recent incidents include a trial in Radom for beating a Ukrainian man. In Kraków, a man verbally abused a Ukrainian couple. In Gdańsk, an attacker targeted a Ukrainian pedestrian and two Polish residents, calling them Banderites.
