The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1,569.40 points on Wednesday, marking a 3% rise to close at 53,356.12.

The surge occurred after President Donald Trump’s Republican Party lost its exclusive control of Washington in the midterm elections. The S&P 500 climbed 119.70 points, or 1.6%, to reach 7,688.62. This represented its best single-day performance in three months. The Nasdaq Composite added 364.50 points, rising 1.4% to 25,736.51.

Wall Street strategists often advise investors to look past election cycles, noting that corporate earnings and interest rates drive long-term market trends more than political control. Brian Jacobsen, chief economic strategist at Annex Wealth Management, stated that “Las ganancias se imponen a las elecciones.” Traders generally prefer a divided government because it reduces the risk of drastic economic shifts. Democrats are poised to take control of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Energy prices dropped as investors anticipated pressure to reverse the war in Iran. Brent crude oil fell below $95, hitting a two-month low. The contract closed down 8.7% at $94.62. Vice President JD Vance blamed the Republican losses on the conflict, which had previously driven oil prices higher. Major oil producers suffered as a result. ExxonMobil shares declined 4.6%, and ConocoPhillips dropped 5.2%.

Defense stocks faced similar pressure. Lockheed Martin fell 6.9%, Northrop Grumman dropped 4.5%, and General Dynamics lost 2.6%. A Congress led by Democrats may challenge the administration’s military strategy in the Middle East. Meanwhile, shares in companies heavily invested in artificial intelligence chips faced scrutiny. Nvidia, a key symbol of the AI sector, fell 3.2% and weighed most heavily on the S&P 500. CoreWeave, which provides cloud access to AI circuits, dropped 9.9%.

Trump Media & Technology Group saw its stock plummet 24.5%. The company, known for the Truth Social platform, trades at $4.49 after briefly hitting a high of $175 five years ago. Elon Musk’s businesses also struggled. Tesla shares fell 3.3%, and SpaceX dropped 3.8%. Musk, a former senior advisor to Trump, may face scrutiny from a Democratic-led Congress. His significant donations to Republicans could make his ventures targets for investigation.

Healthcare and discount retail stocks rose in anticipation of policy changes. HCA Healthcare, which operates hospitals and outpatient centers, jumped 10.3%. Dollar Tree, a retailer serving lower-income consumers, increased 9.6%. Investors expect Democrats to reverse some federal healthcare and food assistance cuts enacted by the Republicans. Renewable energy stocks also benefited. First Solar gained 4.6%, and Enphase Energy rose 3.7%, as lower oil prices may accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels.

Treasury yields declined following the drop in oil prices. The yield on the 10-year note fell from 4.95% to 4.88% late Tuesday. Investors view a Democratic Congress as a potential check on federal debt accumulation and deficit spending. Global markets largely mirrored the U.S. rally. Paris stocks rose 2%, Shanghai gained 2.2%, and London added 1.8%. The Nikkei 225 in Japan was an exception, falling 1.4%.
