A sharp drop in temperature defines the weather shift across Metro Detroit this weekend. Tuesday’s high of 75 degrees at Metro Airport sat just one degree below the all-time record for that date. By Friday afternoon, however, temperatures struggled to rise above the mid-40s. Cloud cover and a chilly northwest breeze kept the air damp and cool, marking a stark contrast to the earlier warmth.
The cold intensifies tonight. Temperatures will fall into the 30s, with some inland communities approaching the freezing mark. This chill sets the stage for the Michigan versus Michigan State football game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. Fans can expect partly cloudy skies, though temperatures will decline steadily throughout the evening. Winds will blow from the northwest at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts reaching 20 mph, adding to the wind chill.
While Southeast Michigan deals with rain and cold, parts of the Upper Peninsula have already seen winter. Friday morning snowfall reports included 3.5 inches southeast of Mount Arvon in Baraga County and 2 inches near Champion in Marquette County. The National Weather Service office near Negaunee recorded 1.5 inches, while Herman in Baraga County and Allouez in Houghton County received 2 inches and 1 inch, respectively. Northern Lower Michigan also experienced light rain and snow showers, though accumulation was minimal. No snow is expected for Metro Detroit from this system.
Temperatures will begin recovering on Saturday. Lows will start in the 30s before climbing through the 40s during the morning. By afternoon, highs should reach the lower 50s. Clouds may persist early in the day, but sunshine is expected to break through later. Residents planning outdoor activities should dress in layers. A heavier jacket and hat are recommended for morning errands, while a medium-weight jacket over a sweater should suffice by afternoon.
Sunday brings a noticeable warm-up. Highs in Metro Detroit are expected to approach 60 degrees under mostly sunny skies. Southwest winds will become gusty, reaching 25 to 30 mph at times. This weather provides a better window for outdoor plans, including the Detroit Pistons game against the Los Angeles Lakers at Little Caesars Arena. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. Sunday. Temperatures will drop into the upper 40s after the game ends, so fans should bring an extra layer for the walk home.
The warming trend continues into early next week. Monday will feature some sunshine with highs in the upper 50s. Tuesday could see temperatures climb into the lower 60s, running several degrees above the typical average for early November. Wednesday, Veterans Day, looks favorable for outdoor ceremonies with partly sunny skies and afternoon highs in the mid-50s. Morning temperatures will be cooler, requiring jackets for attendees.
A cooldown is expected during the second half of next week. Highs will fall to the upper 40s on Thursday, with a slight chance of showers. Friday temperatures will remain in the mid to upper 40s, and overnight lows could return to the lower 30s. For now, the region can enjoy a mostly dry weekend and milder days before the next wave of November chill arrives.
