The city of West University Place has stopped pickleball play on two western courts at Wier Park as of October 23. The action follows a formal recommendation from the local Parks and Recreation Board.

City staff completed an acoustical study to measure the impact of recreational sports on nearby homes. The report found that pickleball sounds stand out more than tennis or basketball. Residents living close to the parks reported that these noises were distinct and noticeable, particularly during repeated sessions.

The board considered installing sound barriers around the courts to reduce noise. Officials determined the barriers were unfeasible because the structures would need to be too tall to be effective. The cost to erect such barriers also proved prohibitive for the city.

Another option involved requiring specialized quiet equipment for all play. Studies indicated that these tools did not provide the same performance as standard gear. The board had voted in May to start a trial period for modified rules, which began on June 22. Under these current rules, pickleball is allowed from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., with quieter equipment required after 8 p.m.

The Parks and Recreation Department plans to re-stripe the two discontinued courts for tennis play only. The board will meet on November 4 to discuss next steps for the courts at Wier and Judson Parks. Until that meeting, the existing modified rules remain in effect. Residents and users will receive notifications when the restriping work is scheduled.
