Huntington Beach residents were reminded of the dangers of crossing major arterials after a fatal pedestrian collision occurred late Saturday night. The incident took place at the intersection of Edinger Avenue and Springdale Street in the city's east side.

Huntington Beach Police Department officers arrived at the scene shortly before 10 p.m. on October 31. They found a silver Toyota 4Runner involved in a crash with a pedestrian. The vehicle was traveling eastbound when it struck the victim.

The deceased is a 65-year-old woman who lived in Huntington Beach. Police stated she was crossing southbound across Edinger Avenue at a point east of Springdale Street. Emergency responders transported her to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

The driver of the vehicle is a 25-year-old man from Midway City. He remained at the scene following the impact and cooperated with investigators. He sustained no injuries in the crash. Police have not released the victim's name pending notification of her family.

Investigators from the department's Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team are examining the circumstances of the collision. They stated that impairment does not appear to be a factor for the driver. However, they have not yet determined if impairment played a role on the pedestrian's side.

No criminal charges have been announced against the driver at this stage. Under California law, a fatal collision does not automatically result in criminal charges. Prosecutors must prove that the driver violated a traffic law or acted negligently in a way that directly contributed to the death.

Potential legal outcomes range from no charges to vehicular manslaughter, depending on evidence of criminal negligence. Civil liability remains a possibility regardless of criminal filings. Insurance companies often review these cases independently to determine fault and potential premium adjustments.

Traffic safety data indicates that pedestrian collisions remain a persistent challenge in Orange County. Approximately 892 pedestrians were killed or injured in traffic crashes in the county during 2023. Many of these fatal crashes occur after dark, a condition relevant to this Saturday night incident.

Authorities are reviewing vehicle data, roadway conditions, witness statements, and surveillance footage before determining if any citations are warranted. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Huntington Beach Police Traffic Investigator Tam Do at 714-536-5666.
