Antonio Brown walked free from a Miami courthouse on Friday after pleading guilty to aggravated assault with a firearm. The 38-year-old former wide receiver accepted a plea bargain that replaces a severe attempted murder charge with a reduced sentence of three years of probation. This legal agreement concludes the criminal proceedings stemming from a shooting incident at a celebrity boxing match in May 2025.
The deal carries specific conditions for Brown's release. He must undergo a psychological evaluation and participate in weekly counseling sessions if the court formally mandates them. Defense attorney Mark Eiglarsh described the terms as an offer his client could not refuse. Eiglarsh noted that Brown faced a mandatory minimum of 20 years and a potential maximum of 30 years in prison if convicted on the original charges. The attorney stated that Brown is grateful the attempted murder charge was dropped and that the matter is now behind them.
The incident occurred on May 16, 2025, during a celebrity boxing event in Miami. Authorities report that Brown grabbed a handgun from a security guard and fired it at a man he had previously physically confronted. The victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, told police that a bullet grazed his neck. Nantambu had previously expressed to police that he did not want Brown prosecuted and preferred the case be closed.
Brown spoke briefly outside the courthouse on Thursday, thanking God for the outcome. The resolution ends a legal battle that has kept the former athlete in the public spotlight for nearly a year. He will now move forward with the conditions set by his probation. Brown's time in the NFL ended with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2021 season.
His final appearance in the league occurred on January 3, 2022, against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Tampa Bay coach Bruce Arians instructed Brown to enter the game, but the wide receiver refused the order. Brown removed his jersey, shoulder pads, undershirt, and gloves before leaving the field bare-chested. He flashed a peace sign to the crowd during his departure, a moment that remains one of the most widely discussed episodes of his career.
