The American Cinema Editors will present its Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year award to John Carpenter at a ceremony scheduled for February 6, 2027. The recognition arrives as part of the annual ACE Eddie Awards, which will take place at Royce Hall at UCLA in Los Angeles. Patton Oswalt is set to return as the host for the event.
The ceremony will announce winners in 14 categories covering editing work in film and television. Alongside Carpenter, two long-time members of the guild, Bonnie Koehler and Christopher Nelson, will be recognized with career achievement awards. Nominations for the competitive categories are slated for release on January 14, 2027.
Carpenter’s filmography includes several titles that defined their respective genres during the 1970s and 1980s. His 1978 release Halloween became the most profitable independent film of its era and initiated a long-running franchise. Other notable works listed by the guild include The Fog, The Thing, Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, Christine, Prince of Darkness, In the Mouth of Madness, Vampires, and Escape from L.A.
Sabrina Plisco, the president of ACE, described Carpenter’s approach to filmmaking in a statement. She noted that his movies get under the skin of audiences and stay there. Plisco argued that few directors understand rhythm, tension, and restraint as well as he does. She emphasized that Carpenter has always trusted his editors to help him find that balance. According to Plisco, that collaboration is the core of what the honor celebrates.
Koehler has edited 15 feature films and nine television series. Her early work in sound design includes The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. As a feature editor, she worked on Bad Influence, Raising Cain, Bruno, Grumpy Old Men, and The Associate. Her television credits span multiple decades, including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which earned her a nomination for an Eddie in 2004. She also edited episodes of House M.D., Crossing Jordan, and Eureka.
Nelson has served as a producer, director, and film editor for cable and network television. He won a Primetime Emmy for editing the series finale of Lost. His work has also received nominations for Six Feet Under, China Beach, Mad Men, and the pilot for The Greatest American Hero. He has contributed to more than 50 TV movies and pilots, with recent credits including Bates Motel, Waco, The Terror, Godfather of Harlem, and Queen Sugar. Plisco stated that both Koehler and Nelson have given generously to the editing community.
The Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year award has previously been given to directors and producers such as Ang Lee, Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, and George Lucas. The career achievement award has recognized editors including Thelma Schoonmaker, Richard Chew, and Alan Heim. The guild will hold its next award ceremony in early 2027, following the January announcement of the competitive nominees.
