No. 1 Miami defeated North Carolina 38-35 on Saturday night to preserve its perfect season. The Hurricanes survived a persistent challenge from the Tar Heels, who kept the game close until the final minute.
Mark Fletcher Jr. secured the decisive lead with a 2-yard touchdown run on fourth down with 7:49 remaining. That was his third score of the contest. Miami's defense immediately capitalized on the offensive surge. Marquise Lightfoot stripped the ball from Billy Edwards Jr. behind the center, and Justin Scott recovered the fumble with 5:33 left on the clock.
The turnover allowed Miami's offense to extend its margin. Darian Mensah completed a 9-yard pass to Malachi Toney to make the score 38-28 with 2:33 remaining. Elija Lofton also contributed on a reception that moved the chains and set up the final scoring drive.
Mensah finished the night with 274 passing yards and three touchdowns. Toney caught two of those passes, while Fletcher caught one. North Carolina's Edwards threw for a season-high 341 yards and four touchdowns. Tight end Jelani Thurman accounted for two of those scores. The Tar Heels sustained long drives, including a 16-play sequence that lasted nearly 8.5 minutes.
Coach Mario Cristobal noted that the fumble shifted the momentum. "Certainly the fumble was a massive turnaround that swung the momentum in the game," Cristobal said. Edwards acknowledged the nature of the contest, stating that games against Miami come down to critical moments.
North Carolina fell to 0-12 against No. 1-ranked teams. The Tar Heels had recovered two onside kicks, but both were negated by penalties. Miami recovered its own onside kick to end the game and kneel out the final seconds. The Hurricanes will host No. 5 Notre Dame next Saturday. North Carolina will travel to UConn.
Miami had previously beaten Florida State in double overtime and Pittsburgh in regulation. The defense allowed its highest total in regulation this season. North Carolina had won its previous two games against Pitt and Duke before losing to Syracuse in overtime last week.
