Florida State University dismissed head football coach Mike Norvell on Sunday, ending his seven-year tenure with the Seminoles. The university confirmed the decision in a public announcement, marking the conclusion of months of speculation regarding the coach's standing. Norvell will receive a $46 million buyout, a figure that had previously suggested he might remain in the role despite recent struggles.

The departure follows a 36-24 loss to Clemson on Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium. The Seminoles struggled to compete during the contest, and the crowd size decreased noticeably in the second half. A banner reading 'Fire Mike Norvell' was displayed over the stadium before kickoff, adding to the visual context of the game. FSU President Richard McCullough stated that the administration has decided to change the football program's leadership. He noted that the university understands the passion of Seminole fans and shares their high expectations for the team's performance.

Alongside Norvell, the university also dismissed defensive coordinator Tony White. White's defense allowed an average of 31.6 points per game this season. Rick Stockstill, a former Florida State quarterback and the current director of scouting, will serve as the interim head coach. Stockstill previously spent 18 seasons at Middle Tennessee State University, where he compiled an overall record of 113-11 and led the team to 10 bowl appearances.

Norvell joined Florida State in 2020. His first four seasons saw steady improvement, culminating in a 13-1 campaign in 2023. That year, the Seminoles won the ACC Championship, but a late-season injury to quarterback Jordan Travis kept the team out of the four-team College Football Playoff. Norvell received both the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year award and the ACC Coach of the Year honor that season. Since 2024, the program's performance has declined sharply.

The 2024 season began with high expectations after the Seminoles signed the seventh-ranked transfer class in the country. The team added players such as D.J. Uiagalelei, Malik Benson, Earl Little Jr., and TJ Ferguson. Despite these acquisitions, the team finished 2-10. The Seminoles averaged 15.4 points per game while allowing 28.0 points per game. Since the start of the 2024 season, Norvell has led the team to a 10-22 record.

The university is also in the process of finding a new full-time athletic director after the departure of Michael Alford in September. The administration plans to conduct a national search for the next head coach, seeking a candidate who aligns with the program's tradition of championship athletics.

Norvell leaves Florida State with an overall record of 41-39. Prior to his time in Tallahassee, he compiled a 38-16 record over four seasons at Memphis, where the team won an American Athletic Conference championship.
