The Longhorns never trailed during Saturday night’s contest at Royal-Memorial Stadium, defeating Mississippi State 31-3. The 11th-ranked team from Austin controlled the game from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. This victory improves Texas to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in SEC play. Mississippi State falls to 4-4 with a 2-4 conference record, marking its fourth consecutive loss.
Quarterback Arch Manning completed three touchdown passes in the win. However, the defensive unit generated the majority of the team’s scoring. Defensive lineman Maraad Watson returned a fumble for a 61-yard touchdown. The defense also recorded seven sacks, applying consistent pressure on the visiting offense. Linebacker Rasheem Biles led that effort with three sacks and two forced fumbles.
Receiver Cam Coleman opened the scoring despite playing through injury. He caught a 14-yard touchdown pass early in the first quarter. Coleman had previously suffered an injury in the previous week’s win over Ole Miss. He finished the game with seven touchdown catches for the season before leaving the field with another injury. The Texas offense subsequently stalled, with Mississippi State failing to capitalize on three punts and a missed 38-yard field goal.
Texas extended its lead with a 45-yard field goal in the second quarter. Manning sustained hits during that drive, losing his helmet once and requiring his hand to be taped after bleeding. The Longhorns also saw a 76-yard punt return touchdown by Ryan Niblett called back due to a block-in-the-back penalty. Watson’s fumble return provided the second defensive score of the season.
The Longhorns led 17-0 at halftime, extending a streak of leading at the break in all five conference games this season. The second half began with a turnover. Manning fumbled on the first possession of the third quarter. Mississippi State’s new quarterback, redshirt freshman Billy Puckett, converted the opportunity into a field goal. Puckett entered the game after starting quarterback AJ Swann was injured and veteran Kamario Taylor remained sidelined.
Texas responded to the deficit with a seven-play scoring drive. Manning connected with Emmett Mosley V for 37 yards and Raleek Brown for 22 yards. Brown then caught a 4-yard touchdown pass to restore a commanding lead. This marked the Longhorns’ first third-quarter touchdown since the season opener against Texas State. The team had previously struggled in this period, contributing to two conference losses earlier in the year.
The Bulldogs could not close the gap in the final quarter. Mosley added a 42-yard touchdown catch with 7:56 remaining to secure the margin. Offensively, Texas finished with 280 yards of total offense and four scoring drives. The defense limited Mississippi State to 188 yards. The unit operated without Colin Simmons, who leads the nation in sacks, for the second straight game.
The Longhorns return to action next Saturday in Columbia, Mo. They will face the Missouri Tigers, who are ranked No. 23 in the AP poll. Missouri enters the matchup with a 5-2 record and a 2-2 conference mark. The Tigers defeated Arkansas 34-10 on Saturday night at home. This game marks the first meeting between the schools since Missouri left the Big 12 after the 2011 season.
