President Donald Trump has agreed to issue a visa to the mother of a 15-year-old Bronx student killed in a shooting last week. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the decision on social media on Saturday. He stated he had just finished a phone call with the president regarding the urgent request.
The visa allows Javits Frimpong’s mother, Doris Adu Gyamfi, to travel from Ghana to the United States. She is expected to attend her son’s funeral. The boy was shot in the abdomen while walking to school in the Bronx shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday. New York City Police transported him to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident, and the investigation remains open.
Mamdani called the murder a pain no parent should endure from such a distance. He emphasized that Frimpong’s mother deserved to say goodbye to her son in person. The mayor noted that all of New York City is mourning the tragedy. U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres, a Democrat representing the Bronx, described the community’s grief. He said the borough is mourning a young man who had his whole future ahead of him.
Thomas Frimpong, the victim’s father, told reporters that his son was a quiet teenager. He learned just days before the shooting that Javits was being bullied at school. Thomas Frimpong said the school principal informed him that two students were disturbing his son. The principal suspended those two students. Thomas Frimpong called his son to check on him, and Javits replied that he was okay. The father moved from Ghana to the Bronx about a year ago to start a new life in the United States.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Ghanaian foreign minister, welcomed the intervention by the mayor and the president. He said Ghanaian officials in New York are coordinating with local authorities. The foreign ministry plans to work with U.S. authorities to secure justice. Ablakwa described the mother’s pain as unimaginable. He stated that everything must be done to ensure she is present to pay her respects.
The Ghanaian government will cover the full cost of Doris Adu Gyamfi’s travel expenses. It is also prepared to contribute to the cost of a dignifying funeral. The White House has not yet issued a formal statement in response to reports seeking comment on the visa approval.
